How Do I Terminate Coverage?

Terminating Coverage in SHP

If you have dependents enrolled in SHP, cancelling your student insurance coverage will also end coverage for your dependents.

Generally, students already enrolled in SHP may terminate, e.g. cancel, coverage because:

Terminating Due to Changes in Registration Status

Students not wanting SHP insurance during their leave or withdrawal, regardless of funding status, must submit a termination of coverage.

  • If you are taking a leave of absence and request a termination of coverage, your coverage will end on the last day of the month that your request is submitted and approved through Gallagher Student Health or the date that your leave becomes effective, whichever is later.
  • If you are withdrawing from the university and request a termination of coverage, your coverage will end on the last day of the month that your request is submitted and approved through Gallagher Student Health or the date your withdrawal is effective, whichever is later.
  • If you are entering the armed forces, your coverage will end as of the date of your military entry.

To receive any refund of your premium, if owed, you must request a termination of coverage.

There is no fee to terminate coverage due to changes in your registration status.

Terminating Because You Have Other Coverage

If the applicable waiver period has passed and you wish to terminate SHP coverage because you have other insurance which meets university requirements and you would otherwise be eligible to waive SHP coverage, you may request a termination of coverage.

Your coverage will end on the last day of the month in which you submit your termination request to Gallagher Student Health or on the date your new coverage is active, whichever is later. You will be responsible for the pro-rated premium based on the coverage end date and charged a termination fee of $110. See our Fees and Refunds page for more information.

To Request Termination of Coverage

  1. Log in to Gallagher Student Health using your Cornell NetID and password.
  2. In "Account Details" under "Plan Summary," click the "Terminate Coverage" link.
  3. Complete the termination form, choosing your appropriate termination reason.
    • Some selections, like "alternate coverage," will prompt you to provide alternate insurance information.
    • Submit the form.
Some SHP termination requests may require additional documentation from your insurance company (e.g.: a Verification of Coverage letter). If this happens, Gallagher Student Health will place the request in a “pending” status and notify you by email indicating what additional documentation is required. All required documents must be submitted within 30 days of request. If you do not provide the necessary documentation, your request will be voided and you will need to submit a new termination request. This will result in a later termination effective date and may increase your pro-rated premium.

Will I get a refund?

If you request to terminate coverage before April 30th of the plan year and the request is approved, students will receive a refund for any months of coverage were paid for but haven't yet happened. In some cases, a termination fee if applicable, and will reduce the refund owed.

No refunds will be provided if the request to terminate is made after April 30th.

Why was my termination request denied?

There are several reasons Gallagher Student Health or the Office of Student Health Benefits may deny or rescind approval for your termination request:

  • Your change in registration status cannot be verified,
  • Your alternate coverage cannot be confirmed,
  • Your alternate coverage does not meet university requirements,
  • You are not eligible to terminate coverage,
  • Your plan has paid for claims during the month(s) of coverage you wish to cancel.

If your request to terminate coverage is denied, your enrollment in SHP will continue until the end of the plan year or until the period for which coverage has already been paid ends, as applicable, and no refund will be provided. If you believe your request was denied in error, please email Gallagher Student Health to begin the appeal process.
