Qualifying Life Events
Qualifying Life Events
Students who initially waived SHP, and dependents of students who did not elect SHP during open enrollment, may enroll in the plan mid-year if they experience a qualifying life event. These include:
- Involuntary loss of other health coverage, such as turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent's plan, losing Medicaid eligibility, or loss of employer-based coverage.
- Changes in household, such as birth, adoption, or marriage.
- Changes in residence, such as moving to a new location where healthcare options are different.
Important: You must request enrollment within 30 days of the qualifying life event.
If you have experienced a qualifying event and would like to enroll in SHP:
- Login to Gallagher Student Health and select "ENROLL-QUALIFYING LIFE EVENT".
- Follow the prompts provided. You may need to provide documentation, such as a marriage or birth certificate, a certificate of prior coverage from your last insurer, or visa entry paperwork.
- Monitor your email and Gallagher Student Health portal to check the status of your request in case more information is needed.
If you are enrolling a dependent in SHP following a qualifying life event, please also see our Dependent Enrollment page for information about payment. (Dependent coverage cannot be paid using your bursar account.)
For more information, please see Special Enrollment Periods in our Certificate of Coverage.
