Optional vision insurance

Student Health Benefits offers an optional vision insurance plan to supplement students' health insurance coverage.

All students are eligible to enroll in the Vision Plan, whether you are covered by Cornell's Student Health Plan (SHP) or a private health insurance plan. Plan enrollees may also choose to enroll dependents (spouses, domestic partners, and children).

NOTE: Student Health Plan Plus (SHP+) members have dental and vision coverage included as a benefit of their plan.

Plan highlights

Cornell's student Vision Plan is offered through VSP® vision care.

The VSP vision care plan provides you access to care from great eye doctors, savings on eye care, fashionable eyewear, WellVision® exams, retinal screenings, lens enhancements, and laser vision correction—all at low out-of-pocket costs.

Your vision benefits….

  • is tailored to fit the needs of Cornell students (and their dependents) studying in Ithaca, New York City, or anywhere else in the United States
  • offers value and savings on eye exams, glasses, lens enhancements, contacts, and laser vision correction 
  • includes access to a nationwide network of 101,000 access points, including the largest national network of independent doctors and over 5,000 retail chain locations like Visionworks, Walmart/Sam’s Club, and Costco (find an in-network provider at vsp.com)
  • offers online shopping with benefit integration: For members who prefer to shop online, you can connect your benefits and shop in-network at Eyeconic®—the VSP authorized online retailer
  • provides in-network and out-of-network coverage

In-network plan highlights…

  • Annual WellVision Exam®–a comprehensive exam designed to detect eye and health conditions—including signs of high blood pressure and diabetes, and eye-health conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, for a $10 copay (for exam and glasses).
  • Glasses are covered once every 12 months.
  • For frames purchased in-network, you’re provided a $120 frame allowance, $140 featured frame brands allowance and 20% savings on the amount over your allowance. Or you can use your benefit at the following retail locations, which includes a $65 Walmart®/Sam's Club®/Costco® frame allowance.
  • Single vision, lined bifocal, lined trifocal lenses and impact-resistant lenses for dependent children are covered in full after a $10 copay in-network.
  • Standard progressive lenses are covered in full, plus an average savings of 30% on other lens enhancements.
  • You can purchase contacts in lieu of glasses, with a $120 allowance for contacts and you have up to a $60 copay for the contact lens exam fitting and evaluation.

NOTE: Premiums are paid directly to VSP.

Eligibility

  • Annual plan term:
    • Registered Cornell students
    • Dependents (spouse, domestic partner, children) of students enrolled in the Dental Plan
       
  • Spring semester only:
    • Students entering Cornell for the first time in the spring (and their dependents)
    • Enrolled students (and their dependents) returning to Cornell in the spring after a fall semester off campus (restrictions apply for students who were eligible to enroll in the fall, but chose not to)

Enrollment

Annual: 7/1/2021 – 9/2/2021- extended due to service outage on 8/30/21.

Spring semester only: 12/1/2021 – 1/31/2022 (available only to new spring admits)

Once you click on the "Enroll Now" button, enter your First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, Last four digits of your SSN (Social Security Number) and follow the enrollment prompts.

For international students, enter your First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth and a four-digit PIN you’ll remember (in place of the last four digits of SSN). Then follow the enrollment prompts.

After you enroll during your open enrollment period, you can:

  • Create an account on vsp.com where you can review your personalized plan details and eligibility.
  • Find a doctor who’s in-network and conveniently located near you.
  • Schedule your appointment. There’s no ID card required. Just provide the last four digits of your SSN or your four-digit PIN.
