SHP Options for Withdrawn Students
Withdrawing from Cornell affects your Student Health Plan (SHP) insurance enrollment. Find your situation below using the withdrawal effective date recorded by the University Registrar.
SHP Continuation is a one-time purchase of 90 days of insurance coverage, starting the day after your student SHP insurance ended. The 60-day application deadline does not extend your student SHP insurance coverage.
If you withdraw before the semester begins
You cannot be enrolled in SHP insurance for any part of that semester unless you purchase SHP Continuation.
If you previously had SHP insurance, your insurance end date moves back to the end of your previous SHP insurance period. You do not receive an additional 30 days of SHP coverage because you withdrew.
Any SHP charge for the upcoming semester will be removed, and any SHP charge you already paid for that semester will be refunded.
If you had SHP insurance during the last semester you were enrolled at Cornell before this one, you can purchase SHP Continuation by applying, paying, and submitting proof of payment within 60 days after the date that SHP insurance ended or the date we sent you written notice of your right to SHP Continuation, whichever is later.
If you have never had SHP insurance, you cannot purchase SHP Continuation.
If you withdraw within the first nine days of a Fall or Spring semester
Cornell refunds all tuition and associated fees for withdrawals effective within the first nine days. You are not considered an active student for SHP insurance during that semester.

If you withdraw on the 10th day or later of a Fall or Spring semester
Cornell Student Health Benefits will send you written notice confirming your last day of SHP insurance.
When determining your SHP insurance end date, we use the later of your withdrawal effective date and the date the University Registrar recorded it. If your withdrawal was recorded after its effective date, we use the date it was recorded.
