Domestic students

Health insurance requirements:

Summer students are not automatically enrolled in Cornell's Student Health Plan (SHP), as academic-year students are.

Please carefully review your health insurance to make sure it meets the university's requirements and provides you with the coverage you need. If it does not, you may be eligible to enroll in SHP for the summer (see summer enrollment information here).

Ithaca health fee:

Students in Ithaca who are not enrolled in a Cornell student health plan (SHP or SHP-M) – for the summer, or from the previous academic year (plan coverage ends July 31) – are automatically assessed a summer Student Health Fee.

The health fee gives students the same pre-paid access to medical and mental health care at Cornell Health as SHP members have (most visits / services have a $10 visit copay).

Exceptions: Students who are exclusively taking online courses, summer camp participants, and Cornell employees taking courses during the summer are exempt from paying the health fee.

International students

Health insurance requirements:

Enrollment in Cornell's Student Health Plan (SHP) is mandatory for international students (with few exceptions).

If you are a visiting international student – or a current international student not already covered by SHP from the previous academic year (plan coverage ends July 31) – you will be automatically enrolled in SHP for each month that your program spans (see summer enrollment information here).

Ithaca health fee:

International students enrolled in SHP are exempt from paying the summer Student Health Fee.
