Late SHP waiver applications

Late Student Health Plan (SHP) waiver applications are accepted within the first month of your SHP coverage (late waiver deadline: August 31 for academic-year students; January 31 for students starting in January). A $100 late fee applies. Visit Waive Your SHP Enrollment for details.

Cancelling SHP mid-year

To request a cancellation of your SHP coverage, please email Gallagher Student Health to request a “Termination of Coverage” application. (Gallagher Student Health manages Cornell's SHP enrollment process.)

Students changing their enrollment status

  • December graduates: Indicate your graduation date when you submit your application. Your SHP coverage will end on January 31 at 11:59 pm. No cancellation fee applies, as long as your application is received by January 31 (a $150 cancellation fee applies after January 31). See premium refund information below.
  • Students withdrawing from the university: Indicate the date of institutional knowledge* associated with your leave date when you submit your application. Your SHP coverage will end on the last day of the month during which your application is received and approved. No cancellation fee applies. See premium refund information below.
  • Students taking a leave of absence: Indicate the date of institutional knowledge* associated with your leave of absence date when you submit your application. Your SHP coverage will end on the last day of the month during which your application is received and approved. A $150 cancellation fee applies for cancellation requests received after August 31.   • Students entering the armed forces: Include documentation of your date of military entry and the date of institutional knowledge* associated with leave date when you submit your application. Your SHP coverage will end as of the date of your military entry. No cancellation fee applies. See premium refund information below.
*Date of institutional knowledge = the date on record with the university when the student initiates their change in status, or when university becomes aware of their change in status. 

Current full-time students

  • Full-time students may only cancel their SHP coverage if they can demonstrate that they have alternate insurance that meets Cornell’s requirements
  • Your SHP coverage will end on the last day of the month during which your application is received and approved. See premium refund information below.
  • A $150 cancellation fee applies for cancellation requests received after August 31. 
  • Students in Ithaca who cancel their SHP coverage will be responsible for the Student Health Fee.

Premium refunds

Once your SHP coverage is cancelled, you will receive a prorated premium refund for the unused months of your plan, reimbursed to your Bursar account. Please note:

  • No premium refunds will be made for months during which SHP is used (i.e. claims from any provider have been submitted and paid).
  • No premium refunds will be made for plans cancelled after April 30. 

Coverage for dependents 

Any dependents (spouse, partner, children) enrolled in SHP will have their plan coverage terminated effective when your plan coverage ends.
