Students On Leave / In Absentia
Enrolling in SHP while on leave or in absentia
Students reported by the University Registrar as being on leave or in absentia are not automatically enrolled in Cornell's Student Health Plan (SHP) (formerly known as the Student Health Insurance Plan, or SHIP).
- you do not need to submit a waiver application to opt out of SHP.
- you may elect to enroll in SHP by contacting Cornell's Office of Student Health Benefits.
Exception: Due to the nature of the Engineering Co-Op program, students who had an approved In Absentia Waiver for the fall semester are required to complete the online waiver application for the spring semester if alternate insurance remains active and meets Cornell’s requirements. This does not apply to Engineering Co-Op students who are studying in absentia in the fall semester. Please contact us for more information.
How to enroll
Please contact the Office of Student Health Benefits for an enrollment application.
- Open enrollment for Fall students ends September 30
- Open enrollment for new entering Spring students ends February 28
